AV COMMISSIONING SPECIALIST

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

The AV Commissioning Specialist leads the commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, and final deployment of commercial audiovisual systems. This role is responsible for ensuring integrated AV systems function according to design specifications and client expectations. This position reports directly to the AV Designer.

RESPONSIBILITIES

SKILL, KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

System Commissioning & Deployment

  • Commission commercial audiovisual systems including audio, video, control, and unified communications platforms.
  • Configure and validate DSPs, control systems, video switching, audio routing, conferencing systems, and networked AV devices.
  • Verify system operation aligns with project scope, drawings, and performance requirements.
  • Perform final system testing, tuning, and optimization.

 

Technical Troubleshooting

  • Diagnose and resolve technical issues during installation and commissioning phases.
  • Troubleshoot signal flow, network connectivity, control programming integration, and device communication.
  • Coordinate with programmers, project managers, design/engineers, and installation technicians to resolve system deficiencies.
  • Maintain detailed documentation of issues, resolutions, and field modifications.

 

Field Engineering & Quality Control

  • Interpret AV system schematics, wiring diagrams, elevations, and construction documents.
  • Verify installation quality and ensure systems are installed according to company standards.
  • Conduct punch-list reviews and final quality assurance inspections.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to installation technicians.

 

Client Training & Support

  • Provide end-user training on AV system operation and functionality.
  • Support customer acceptance testing and system demonstrations.
  • Deliver professional onsite communication with clients, contractors, and project stakeholders.
  • Assist with post-installation support and service transitions when required.

 

Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate commissioning reports and field documentation.
  • Update as-built documentation and communicate field changes to design/engineering team.
  • Record device configurations, firmware versions, IP addressing, and testing results.

SKILL, KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in commercial audiovisual integration or related technical field required.
  • Experience in commissioning complex audio, video, control, and conferencing environments in corporate, education, healthcare, hospitality, or government settings.
  • Strong understanding of AV signal flow, system commissioning, and excellent troubleshooting capability required.
  • Experience with commercial AV manufacturers and technologies.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and system schematics.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to travel to job sites as required.
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record required.

 

Preferred Technical Experience

Experience with one or more of the following:

  • Crestron, Extron, Q-SYS, Biamp, Shure, Yamaha, Cisco, Poly, or similar platforms
  • DSP configuration and audio tuning .
  • Video conferencing systems including Microsoft Teams Rooms and Zoom Rooms
  • Networked AV technologies including Dante, AV-over-IP, and VLAN configuration
  • Control system troubleshooting and validation.
  • Configure systems and perform final verification testing.

 

Preferred Certifications

  • CTS or CTS-I certification
  • Q-SYS Level 1 or higher
  • Dante Certification
  • Manufacturer certifications from Crestron, Extron, Biamp, or similar
  • Networking certifications are a plus

 

Work Environment

This role is primarily field-based and requires travel to customer locations and construction sites. Work may involve equipment lifting, ladder usage, and coordination with multiple trades in active construction environments.
